Thanks vandeebgroup ! That's clear now ;-) We also had a famous record club in France, the "Club Dial" (with the famous "Entreat" promo release - item #2701 - given free when you bought 3 Cure CDs from this club), but they used to sold regular issues, as found in regular record stores.

A record club in the US was a business model for distributing music by major labels. BMG Music Club still exists in this form, but has changed names and stopped accepting new memberships. You get an initial offer to entice people to join, with the contractual obligation to purchase a certain number within a year at "regular club prices". The regular club prices were usually really high, and with shipping and handling charges, would often be near $20. As with all other business models for music marketing, this one is dying out with the advent of iTunes, file-sharing, etc. Not sure when Columbia House quit, but I think it was quite awhile ago. Interestingly, these Clubs would have their own print runs for CDs (and LPs back in the day), with their own catalog numbers added to print and sometimes the discs/lp labels. Not sure why they would do this, as it would be much cheaper to just order additional copies at the time of initial pressing by the record label. I'm guessing it was at the request of the record labels that the Club versions be able to be differentiated so they didn't end up in retail stores. (The Clubs would have reduced costs from the record labels, with an agreement that they would purchase a certain quantity). But strangely not all copies that were distributed by Clubs had the additional catalog numbers. I'm a member at BMG (in order to get the different pressings of Cure CDs) and some of the copies I've ordered are identical to the regular retail copies. Wish Cd and 3IB deluxe 2CD editions were this way, I believe. Maybe has something to do with the Clubs purchasing over stock from the label when available. --Zack
